It might sound hyperbolic to say about a metronome, but this metronome is visionary.
Smart devices have brought in a new age in metronomes, and many metronomes now offer polyrhythmic capability, step up training, random drop out clicks to work on your timing, playlists, etc. PolyNome has all these features and more. It even has a mixer with panning!
One feature I love is that you can email your complex clicks to other people that have the app. This is great for working on rhythm training with students.
PolyNome operates according to a somewhat different vision of metronomes than most. It has two separate metronomes that can run simultaneously. Each metronome can have its own rhythm and time signature, and each metronome can have two separate clicks based on its underlying rhythm. It is very notation centered.
PolyNome also accounts for some important aspects of tempo that have been overlooked in most software metronomes. For instance, most app based metronomes dont account for the logarithmic nature of tempo. PolyNome allows you to use the more musical tempo increases from classic metronomes, as well as your own percentages, or your basic digital linear approach.
If this sounds complicated, it is. (Just like some of the rhythms are working on!) This metronome really strives to be comprehensive. It has the options and flexibility that youd more commonly find in a desktop application. Its very simple to set up a basic click, but some of the features require that you really understand the entire app to make use of them. One example: the step-up trainer is not in the metronome presets, but has to be accessed from within a playlist.
I dont think that this is a the metronome for every musician or for every task. It doesnt have the loudest click, and it doesnt have the simplest interface. But it has features you wont find in any other metronome, and if youre trying to really develop your rhythmic and tempo chops, you should definitely get this app.
I also have found the developer to be very responsive and helpful. It seems like hes really engaged in developing this app, and Im confident that there is more fantastic stuff to come in future versions.
